It was just announced that Barcelona will be the starting point of Vuelta a España 2023. It will be a team time trial into the city, and a second stage in the mountains around Barcelona. The last time La Vuelta arrived at Barcelona was in 2012, stage Andorra-Barcelona with victory for the Belgian Philippe Gilbert ahead of the catalan Joaquim Rodriguez (picture on the left). The usual ending point of the stages in Barcelona is Montjuic, the mountain where the Olimpic Stadium is (Olympics were in 1992). Only once so far Barcelona was the starting point of La Vuelta a España. It was in the remote 1962 with the stage Barcelona-Barcelona, which winner was the basque Anton Barrutia. On the other hand, Barcelona also made part of the most important Grand Tour: Le Tour de France. Barcelona hosted the Tour in 1957, 1965 and was stage ending in the Tour de France 2009 in the stage Girona-Barcelona. The winner was Thor Hushovd. Of course, Barcelona is usually the ending point of the local professional race Volta a Catalunya. This race, by the way, celebrated recently its 100th edition. Then, this is big news for the Barcelona cycling community, hosting the start of Vuelta a España 2023. It will be a nice opportunity to show the world what our city has to offer to the cycling fans!

Barcelona is a great place for cycling, there is no doubt. In a former post, we introduced 10 of the most popular climbs around Barcelona, but today let me introduce some short and steep hidden climbs close to Barcelona, not very known (or maybe not known at all) for most of the local cyclists. Some of them are dead-end climbs, leading to some remote urbanization with fantastic views. No need for many words in this article, I just join the names, short description, and the link to the Strava segment, so you can find them, get there and challenge yourself to get to the top. Carrer Llobregos (Barcelona), 1,4 km at 8% average, with some parts over 17%. Inside Barcelona city, in the Carmel mountain. By the way, near the top, there is a great viewpoint from the Bunkers del Carmel. Mas Ram. 257 m. 1,8 km at 9%. Starting at Tiana in a crossroad very close to the highway. Dead end road at the top of the urbanization. Supermaresme. 3km at 9% average gradient. This luxury urbanization has some magnificent luxury houses with stunning views. Some VIPs are said to be staying around here when they come to Barcelona and they don't want want to stay at the city center. It is one of the few climbs listed here which has 2 sides (except the last common stretch). It can be included in a loop ride. Sant Carles. Starting at Santa Agnes de Malanyanes. The interesting side is starting at C-35 road and the steepest part is a 500 mts long 12% straight part. It is properly a road, not a street in the urbanization. It hurts. Can Massuet-El Far.
