Girona is one of the most important cycling destinations all over the world. A very significant cycling climb around Girona is Sant Pere de Rodes Monastery. The variety of routes is also a very good reason to come to Girona for cycling. Flat tiny roads, together with scenic routes and also steep climbs, so close the Pyrenees are. Sant Pere de Rodes has 2 sides to climb from. One from Vilajuiga and the second one from the sea, from Port de la Selva. Especially recommended Port de la Selva side, as the views over the Mediterranean sea are amazing, and the climb is a little steeper than Vilajuiga side. On top of that, this side has been recently asphalted, then the road is in perfect conditions for the road bikes! No need to say that one of the main appeals of this climb (whichever the side) is the impressive monastery on top. This Monastery refers to Romanic Catalan art and was built in the XI century. Some interesting loop including Sant Pere de Rodes There are several very interesting loops in which to include Monestir de Sant Pere de Rodes. Maybe the most interesting is starting in Perelada (a nice wine destination by the way), and getting France via Coll de Banyuls. Then return to Spain on the very nice coastal road to Llançà and Port de la Selva. Once there climbing Sant Pere de Rodes and finally descent to Vilajuiga and back to Perelada. It is also worth mentioning that this area close to France is sometimes hit by fast winds (the so-called Tramuntana). It could make really hard even to get up on a bike. Pirinexus cycling route is a marked cycling route around Catalonia which includes gravel paths and small roads. No need to say that Catalonia has become one of the best places for cycling. For both road cycling and gravel cycling. The total distance of this Pirinexus route is 360 km, then it is possible to do it in just 1 day (tough ride, indeed!), or 2 days, also 3 stages (pretty doable for experienced bikers), etc. The route is mainly easy even if it crosses the Pyrenees (border Spain-France). The highest point is Coll d'Ares, at 1513 mts, but from the Spanish side it is much milder than from the French side. If done from the north side, Coll d'Ares, starting at Arles Sur Tech, it is a remarkable climb 32 km long with a total elevation of 1250 mts. In general, this Pirinexus cycling route is much easier if done clockwise Girona, suggested starting point. A good starting point could be Girona, as it is one of the most important cycling destinations in the world. Mainly for road cycling, but also for gravel cycling. Then, from Girona, the main towns to go through are Olot, Camprodon, (Coll d'Ares), Prats de Molló, Arles Sur Tech, Le Boulou, La Jonquera, Perelada, L'Escala, Palamós, Sant Feliu de Guixols and finally again to Girona. One of the most important cycling infrastructures in Catalonia is the Greenways, the so-called" Vies Verdes", former railways converted into bike paths. This Pirinexus route goes along some of the main Greenways. Especially remarkable is the way from Sant Feliu de Guixols (at the coast) to Olot, getting through Girona. But all the Pirinexus cycle route gets to perfect paths for cycling, so it is a great experience in which you can discover Catalonia, southern France, and have a taste

Rocacorba is one of the most famous climbs around Girona. There are other very known climbs (Els Angels, very close to Girona probably the most popular one), but if you are searching for some steep climb, do not hesitate, this is it. Rocacorba is a Sanctuary and it means literally "folded rock". The road leads to an antena at the end of the climb (it is a "cul de sac" as french say), and the desviation to the Sanctuary is about 200 mts before you get the end of the road. Obviously you have to descend the same way you climbed. Views at the top are spectacular, specially overlooking the Banyoles lake (the climb begins at Porqueres, very close to the popular Banyoles lake, where triathlon is really popular). This road is a pretty modern road as it was just asphalted on 2006 (!), no wonder it has become a very popular climb just in recent years.
